Molybdenum Blood Tests

MY MOLYBDENUM BLOOD TEST

I've just returned from my first Moly level draw. I spent 40 minutes in the waiting room, and 5 minutes in the lab. The lab technician will send the tube to California for testing, and the results should be available in a week.

GETTING READY

One must prepare for a Molybdenum Blood Test.

For three days prior to testing, do NOT

1) Eat no leafy green vegetables, legumes, or shellfish
2) Take supplements--specifically minerals
3) Take antacids

All of these can lead to inaccurate tests.

It does not need to be drawn while fasting.

PROCEDURE

It is a standard draw: one stick, one tube. No big deal.

The tubes have royal blue tops and have a small amount of EDTA inside (NOT heparin). Make certain that the technician shows you the tube. It should have EDTA written on it. Most laboratories will refuse the sample if it is not in this special tube.

RESULTS

Normal Molybdenum serum levels:

.02 - .13 ug/dL (NIH)
3.5 - 7.7 ngMol/mL (Wester, 1973)
.10 - 4.73 ng/mL (Yoshida, 2006)
3.9 - 10.4 nmol/L (Burgerstein)
.5 - 15.73 microg/100mL (Roth, 1968)
.5 - 1.1 ng/g (males), .8 - 1.7 ng/g (females) (Morgan and Holmes, 1972)
1.2 microg/l (Gehring, 1999)
0 - 2.6 microg/l (Forrer, 2001)

It just depends on who you ask...

Do remember also that there is a difference between "normal" and "optimal." What your body needs is often best determined by you and your healthcare team regardless of standards.
